Prepare to return to Ramgarh! Sholay, the 1975 Indian action-adventure classic, is going to be back in theaters soon. The legendary film is scheduled for a re-release on December 12, 2025. Fans will get to see a never-before-seen ending with a new incredible climax.
The film features the timeless actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. Ramesh Sippy, the creative director, has directed it. It is a film that people remember because of the characters and the dialogues. The re-release is happening because of the original ending. That ending was cut because of restrictions during the Emergency that were imposed by the authorities.
In the original, uncut ending, we see the final revenge of Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar). He kills the evil bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) with his spike-studded shoes. The Censor Board thought that this original scene was too violent and hence, they did not allow the film to be released in 1975 unless the scene was changed.
This re-release is a huge milestone for Indian cinema. Besides the original ending being restored, the film is also completely restored. It is going to be shown in a gorgeous 4K version. The sound has also been enhanced to Dolby 5.1. That definitely guarantees a very engaging experience for the audience. Sholay will be shown in around 1,500 theaters across the country.
The film’s dialogues have become a part of daily Indian conversational language. Even if you take the inflation factor into account, Sholay's box office collection is still huge. The total earnings of the film are said to be more than ₹3,000 crore in today's money. This amount is far more than the grosses of the modern-day blockbusters like Jawan and Pathaan. This re-release is a perfect opportunity to watch a timeless classic and celebrate it.
